THE POWER OF PASTEL
The word "pastel" can conjer up images of little pink and green party candies. The dictionary even includes "light in tone" along with a definition of powdered pigment and binder pressed into sticks for drawing.
The five artists exhibiting in Gallery 16's The Power of Pastel show have provided a display of pastels with a punch. Sherry Gallagher and Anita Ronning of Great Falls, Belt artist Gerry Johnson, Janet Sullivan of Missoula and Lynne Perry of Whitefish have created dramatic sunrises and sunsets, Montana scenes, wildlife in surprising hues and rugged mountain men. Gallagher, best known for her portrayal of Mountain Men, Lewis and Clark, Native American and historic subjects and Sullivan, who has been selected as Artist in Resicence by both Crater Lake National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation, are new to Gallery 16. Marge Kline will also demonstrate rosmaling, traditional Norwegian decorative painting, as part of the Sons of Norway heritage celebration.
A public reception will be held between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. at 608 Central Avenue. The show will run through June 30th. Gallery hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
